This painting class consist of 3 parts:

  1. Learning to draw with a square grid Technic.
  2. Under-painting with acrylics.
  3. Finishing the painting with oils or acrylics.

Square Grid Drawing Technic:

Start by drawing in the canvas with a pencil using the Square Grid Drawing Technic. Start by dividing your sketch or photo in proportional squares, then you divide your canvas in with the same Technic in proportional squares. It doesn’t matter how big is your canvas or if it is a mural, the proportions will be perfect.

When using the Square Grid Drawing Technic you defined:

  1. Composition
  2. Proportions
  3. Light and shade

Under-painting with acrylics:

Use your acrylics with lots of water because they flow better, impregnating your canvas, don’t leave spots without paint. Acrylics are very good for under-painting because they dry faster. They create a worm color that once you finish your final painting with oils or acrylics in the top, they look brighter.

Finishing the painting with oils or acrylics:
Start with the clouds, continue with the ocean, the beach and finally the people.

Canvas: 11″x 14 or any size.

Orange Reflections in the River

This is a sunset of the beautiful Oconaluftee River that flows through The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Transitions from blues to reds and yellows reflected in the water.

The Oconaluftee River is an inspiration for painting because of its beauty and legends. The Cherokee Indians considered the waters of the Oconaluftee River sacred. It was the deeper part of the river, where all the animals came to wash and heal their wounds when they had been hurt by hunters.

This painting has been selected by The Wake Forest Public Art Commission among 5 paintings of participant local artists, for the “2019 Spotlight on Wake Forest Artists Exhibit”. Click here for event invitation >>
