The Lost Colony Painting

The Lost Colony

Oil Painting by Clina Polloni. 16”x 20”.

The Lost Colony by Clina Polloni.

The Lost Colony by Clina Polloni.

Inspired by Eleanor Dare waiting for her father John White. Her story of hopes 1587.

This painting is FOR SALE, exhibited at local businesses in Wake Forest NC.

From the collection of “Colonial Life in North Carolina”.

Eleanor Dare of England, was a member of the Roanoke Colony and the daughter of John White, the colony’s governor. While little is known about her life, more is known about her than most of the sixteen other women who left England in 1587 as part of the Roanoke expedition. She married Ananias Dare. It is known that she gave birth to their daughter Virginia Dare on Roanoke Island, in what is now the state of North Carolina. The girl was the first child of English parents to be born in North America, on 18 August 1587, shortly after their arrival. Eleanor Dare, along with everyone else remaining in the “Lost Colony”, disappeared during the two years before her father was able to returned to the colony with supplies from England.

The Mermaid of the Wave Painting. La Sirena de la Ola.

This seascape of a mermaid was inspired by my friend Dianne, her eyes are as blue as the ocean.

There are so many tales of mermaids all over the worlds’ oceans singing to sailors because they are lonely and longing for love. Maybe in the vast Outer Banks NC beaches you will hear one playing in a wave.

This painting class consist of 3 parts:

  1. Learning to draw with a square grid Technic.
  2. Under-painting with acrylics.
  3. Finishing the painting with oils or acrylics.

Square Grid Drawing Technic:

Start by drawing in the canvas with a pencil using the Square Grid Drawing Technic. Start by dividing your sketch or photo in proportional squares, then you divide your canvas in with the same Technic in proportional squares. It doesn’t matter how big is your canvas or if it is a mural, the proportions will be perfect.

When using the Square Grid Drawing Technic you defined:

  1. Composition
  2. Proportions
  3. Light and shade

Clouds on an Ocean Sunset Drawing with a Square Grid

Under-painting with acrylics:

Use your acrylics with lots of water because they flow better, impregnating your canvas, don’t leave spots without paint. Acrylics are very good for under-painting because they dry faster. They create a worm color that once you finish your final painting with oils or acrylics in the top, they look brighter.

Finishing the painting with oils or acrylics:
Start with the clouds, continue with the ocean, the beach and finally the people.

Canvas: 11″x 14 or any size.

Acrylic Colors:

  1. Titanium White
  2. Cadmium Yellow Medium

Instructions of how to do this painting:

  1. Start by drawing the ocean and sky.
  2. Do your under-paint or imprimatura with a wash of acrylic silver. Acrylics are very good for under-painting because they dry faster. They create a worm color that once you put the oils in the top, they look brighter.
