Inspired by my poem “An Instant of Time”, about love and flowers:

Love like flowers
is a fragile breeze;
it is a flash of time,
born on a clear day,
explodes in magnificent
colors and feelings,
and diminish in the
shadows of life.

Flowers of Love Poem Drawing

After the cold days of winter. I can’t wait for the warm days of spring to see the pale daffodils or the purple irises emerging, green baby leaves appearing in the old oak tree and finally a rainbow of colors; camellias, geraniums, tulips, peonies, crape myrtles, dahlias, roses and pansies. I get my canvas, brushes, bright colors and go outside, seat in the purple chair and paint. I live in Franklinton, NC, USA, travel to Chile to see my family and also paint.

Instructions:

Start by drawing the poem with a medieval calligraphy. The first letter of the poem is at the right side with a gold background and decorated with flowers.
Draw flowers around the poem.
Create a border with gold and heavy gesso.
Paint with acrylics or oils.

Gold Labrador Retriever Portrait

Buffy was a Gold Labrador Retriever.

When I was commissioned to paint Buffy’s oil Pet Portrait, I was fascinated by the beauty of this Gold Labrador Retriever. The expression of her eyes was all about love and caring for her family. Painting her eyes and the many colors of his hair was a wonderful experience. I put her in a background of white snow because she loved to play in it.

Canvas: 16″x 20″

Instructions and Progression:

Draw and paint the under-paint: It was done in acrylics because they dry faster and it gives you the opportunity to paint immediately. Use Raw Sienna mixed with Titanium White.
Paint the background: Start by painting the snow using oil painting.
Start up with Buffy’s face: Put special detail in the eyes, hair and nose. It will give you a better understanding of her features.
Paint Buffy’s body: Taking advantage of the texture and the many gold tones of her hair.

Red Geraniums on a Red House

This is a simple painting designed for the painting classes. Learn to paint an old red house in the mountains of North Carolina, adorned with bright red geraniums in the front.

Instructions of how to do this painting:

Start by drawing the window, the old wood of walls and finally the geraniums in the pot. Put attention to the cracks of the wood.
Do your under-paint or imprimatura with a wash of acrylics, they are very good for under-painting because they dry faster. The under paint is very important because you are drawing with colors and defining light and shade in your final painting. The imprimatura is an initial stain of color painted on the canvas. It provides a transparent, toned ground, which will allow light falling onto the painting to reflect through the paint layers.
